australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.

simple enough to come true (lag005) is the debut solo e.p. from l.a.g. label boss arthur kimskii. the ep contains 3 cuts. simple enough is the emotional big room cut with trippy vocals and rolling bass and big kicks. she survived playfully uses noise elements and reverb. the producers ny/nj influences really shine through in this deep house/techno cut.

the australian dj, producer and musician jad lee likes to have several irons in the fire all at the same time. for instance hes a member of mitzi (along charles murdoch and dominiqe bird), one half of the pan-pacific indiepop duo twiggy lashes and a solo artist known as jad & the ladyboy. under this moniker he releases music which can be described as soulful house with plenty of disco influences. for never come back down jad had singer mark borgazzi in his studio to cut a precious, groovy two-stepper into a genuine pop diamond. in order not to get only radio airplay, but also to be played out in gloomy underground clubs with extra fat subwoofers yannick provides his homicidal sexfactmix. with its untamed bassline and a milling-machine like synthesizer this feels like an unchecked punch to the gut. there will be blood on the dancefloor!

before dj gregory was point g. point g is an alias used by the french produced to explore a gritty, raw sound steeped in abstract vibes but with a very basic approach, which makes it all the more captivating making a strong impact on the underground scene in the 90s, point g gained much respect amongst his peers with timeless releases like the raw ep, on the raw again ep…. originals vinyl copies of many of point gs early tracks are notoriously hard to find, giving this comeback even more kudos.

wayne gardiner is something of an unsung hero in the deep house world. his productions on numerous labels (nervous, strictly rhythm, ibadan etc) under his own name, as classic man, logic, track masters and many more all have the perfect balance of rough and smooth, deep pads, jazzy keys, floating melodies and chopped vocal samples are all underpinned by tough driving beats and percussion creating his trademark sound. the ep features 2 mixes of killer a-side come on, do anything, 2 mixes of the slamming b-side cut i need you so bad and finally the basement jam which rounds things out. 5 tracks of pure 1992 nyc garage, one for true aficionados and house heads!

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
rabo & snob eschew the worn rhythms of disco injecting a heretofore unheard blend of middle-eastern rhythm mixed with western influence. equal parts studio musician and disco academia, this tel aviv duo know their history and can see the future. here we come is an appropriate maxim on their maiden vinyl release. these two weave a groove combining original and sampled elements to create a three track ep, each cut as strong as the next.

massive two tracker from jonny miller on his 2nd edits release on kat.what you did is quite simply a whopper! disco music as god intended it - arms aloft, eyes shut, inhibitions nowhere to be seen, smiles bigger than life itself. what we have here is not an edit as such but a reworking of chaka khans what you did, subtly housed up, re-arranged, chopped, fil-tered and re-mastered within an inch of its life - chaka herself pretty much always sounds in-credible but here the vocal just seems to stand even taller than usual. on the other side we have something in which some of our slightly older party folk may well recognise. dionnes house classic from 88 gets the full edit treatment and the timing on this just seems so right. originally released on the ace bigshot label out of canada (and was just huge in the hacienda), re-mastered, stretched out, re-arranged and making the most out of all those old school stabs, ploddy bass lines and timeless vocals.

after the very successful foray into split eps, luv shack records continues to explore this concept with luv013. the ep sees upcoming duo space echo make a return after their smash hit -soul power-, while the b-side is conducted by wahlberliner rotciv. -come back home-, the opening track by space echo, is a slowly building but effortlessly captivating piece of hypnotic house music with a raw funk attitude. the gently evolving synth line and the strong vocal hook are the spine of this anthemic track. the seemingly laid back -hangover- just oozes b-movie sleaze and might be space echos little hommage to 60 s lounge music, with an array of distorted guitars and soft pads coming to good use. that is until the synth theme kicks in mid-track and turns the piece into a late night weapon.
